Highlight of Last Week: Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster

The Plucky Squire may be the most talked about release last week in my circles, but I’m most looking forward to giving Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster a try. I never took more than a test drive of the original release, and by the time I did it felt clunky enough to hope for some modernization. I’m curious to see how it’s received given mixed, but mostly positive reviews (IGN 8/10, GameSpot 7/10, Eurogamer 3/5). There’s been no shortage of zombie games for the last few years (ok, decades), so will Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster do more than draw in old fans looking for a modern experience?

Coming This Week

Whenever a storied Nintendo franchise is scheduled for a new release, it’s going to get plenty of well deserved attention. The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom hits the Switch on September 26 and previews have even casual Zelda fans like myself intrigued. You play as Princess Zelda, who can summon all sorts of objects, from beds to snakes, in order to solve puzzles and defeat enemies in a top-down style rather than a 3D open world like the last two games.

G.I. Joe: Wrath of Cobra makes it debut on PC on September 26, with promised releases on Switch, Xbox, and Playstation consoles sometime in the future. It looks right out the same playbook as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge and The Karate Kid: Street Rumble (released just last week) – take a hit media property from the 1980s and make an arcade beat ‘em up powered by nostalgia. It worked well enough for TMNT, so I’m rooting for this one. G.I. Joe doesn’t have the best history of translating to hit games, but ever since Streets of Rage 4, beat ’em ups have seen a revitilization.

Not a totally new release, but it’s great to see Balatro make its way to iOS and Android this week on September 26th. The breakout, “kinda like poker” deck building, game of the year candidate came out of nowhere in 2024 and it seems tailor-made for mobile devices.
